Valley of the Dolls 50th Anniversary Edition eBook Jacqueline Susann

I think Jacqueline Susann would have loved the cover of this new 50th Anniversary edition of "Dolls." I don't think she would have been impressed however, with all the typo's inside. I'm not impressed with them either! Come on Grove Press this book is classic. When first published in 1966 by Bernard Geis, these typos weren't there. And they weren't there the following year when Bantam books started publishing it! I'm giving the book five stars just the same because I love the story, the new cover, the Foward, and the Preface.

Let's get these grammatical errors resolved for future editions.

Valley of the Dolls 50th Anniversary Edition eBook Jacqueline Susann Reviews

“The 1960s will be remembered for Andy Warhol, The Beatles and me.” Jacqueline Susann

Fifty-years ago, Jacqueline Susann, in all of her Pucci glory, wrote the book that would change publishing for all time. VALLEY of the DOLLS introduced the world to sex, drugs and more sex. She was the original chick to write chick-lit and to publish it in bubblegum pink covers.

She was the first feminist to stand up for women’s rights and burst into the “boys club” of publishing and create a new cutting-edge way of marketing novels – book tours and television interviews. VALLEY of the DOLLS was an immediate blockbuster then and has gone on to sell more than 31-million copies world-wide in 30 languages.

It was the ’60s and VALLEY of the DOLLS dealt with so-called taboo subjects – drugs, alcoholism, gay husbands, abortion, suicide, cancer, adultery, the list went on. Readers loved reading about a world where once you turned thirty, you were old and over!

What was the book about? Dolls barbiturates, seconal is red, nembual yellow, and amytal emerald green, capsules or tablets; washed down with vodka or swallowed straight—for Anne, Neely, and Jennifer, it doesn’t matter, as long as the pill bottle is within easy reach. Three gorgeous women become best friends when they’re young and struggling in Manhattan, climbing to the top of the entertainment industry—only to find that once on top, the only place left to go is down—into the Valley of the Dolls.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of VALLEY of the DOLLS, Grove Press has release a collector’s edition of the novel. A new film is in production!

For ALL things Valley of the Dolls, check out (...) you’ll be immersed into the land of the dolls!
I was surprised to enjoy this book. I haven't (yet) read anything of the background of this book, but it sounds like it's based on a true story, or at least, a composite of what the public knows about the seedy dark side of successful people in the entertainment industry. Human nature doesn't change much. It sounds like it could have just as easily been set in 2017 as 1945-1965. It was compelling and I was keen to finish and find out how the lives of the three main characters turned out. Now I'm excited to see the 1967 movie.
I read this book back in the 70's after reading Once Is Not Enough. This was tame compared to that book! I saw the movie before I read the book and of course they are way different. The book is so much more! Love this book and even though it is "trash", it's some of the best trash I've ever read. This edition is fantastic as I just had a paperback copy that was well worn. This edition has some "extras" in it as well and has the original red page edges like they used to do. Love this book and love this edition!
I first read this book when it was recommended by my sister and mum and it honestly took me a while to open it up and actually start reading it. But After the first few pages, I was hooked. I would read it in as many free spaces of time I could! I am a little picky when it comes to authors writing but this has really grown on me. It's really a beautiful book/story, I don't want to spoil it but please take my word. I feel like I know these women and it makes me want to live in that era! I intend to read some of her other books as well- next is YARGO. WOULD RECOMMEND to everyone =)
I first read this book in high school, when it was oh, so controversial. Now it has become a guilty pleasure for me--I have read it 5 or 6 times since. The characters are fleshed out so well that they pull you into the story lines. I must admit that I would have liked to shake some sense into Anne's head, though! Good grief, woman, the grass is not always greener on the other side! I liked the way the stories were played out over about 20 years, like a window into the entertainment industry and how it was forever changed by television. The sexual content is tame by today's standards, but the message is universal "Celebrity and money are nothing without real relationships and real love."
My book has basically fallen apart on me. I hardly have a crease in the spine because the damn thing just fell apart when I got to page 100! The further I read the more sections seem to come apart from the binding. There are so many spelling errors it's becoming almost like a game to count them & I'm tempted to highlight them and mail the book to the publishers. I am so disappointed because this is a beautiful novel with the pink pages and the cute polka dots on the cover and sporadically scattered amongst the chapters. For a 50th anniversary edition it's appalling and I'm sad her estate allowed such a piss poor edition to be released.

The writing is timeless and honestly it flows so effortlessly you'll be half way through before you know it. I recommend buying a different edition or maybe just not opening this one and keeping it for looks on the shelf.
I ordered this 50th anniversary edition of this book hoping it would be better quality than ones I found at used book stores. I ended up ordering a used one online about 30 pages into this book. I LOVE THE NOVEL. Valley of the Dolls is an excellent book, but the amount of spelling errors is out of control. The first I noticed was "how" instead of "know". I then noticed a few more as I continued and got to a part where the character, Allen, was addressed in the book as "Alien". I'm highly disappointed in the publisher of this anniversary edition and their lack of respect for a classic. Just buy a used older version, avoid the annoying spelling errors.
