Crusader The Sanctuary Series Book 4 eBook Robert J Crane
I was half way through the first book in this series and I kept thinking that I would soon meet the characters in our real world playing the stories fantasy characters. The D&D format has never been followed so strictly in any story I have ever read. Elves, dark elves, paladins, dwarves, trolls,etc..... Spells that ,without much cost, heal and even resurrect characters. Magic portals for fast travel. Guilds of various races that quest repeatedly in the same areas for weapons and wealth. The world building is exactly like the rules for many mmorpg's. So much so that when I realized that there wasn't going to be revelation that the guilds weren't a manifestation of real world people playing them that I almost quit reading. Since this is the fourth book, and a hefty one at that, and I am writing this review means that I didn't quit. The plot spread out over these four books is told in flashback form and the mystery as to how the main character got to this point is ever so slowly revealed. That mystery along with pretty good character development and pretty decently written action sequences kept me reading and I am glad that I did. In my opinion this would make a decent ending to the story, even though the mystery isn't completely resolved, so I am going take a break before deciding whether to continue reading the books that follow.Product details

Crusader The Sanctuary Series Book 4 eBook Robert J Crane Reviews
Robert J. Crane went a little overboard in his prolix tendency in this book. That is, Tending to use large or obscure words which few people understand. I can only guess that this was done to up the average reader level because to be honest, I don't think this would have been an appropriate book to see on middle school shelf.
I expect you could enjoy this on its own, but a lot of what is going on behind the scenes really requires you to have read books 1-3 in this series. I was actually expecting to see a few more loose ends tied up with what was all going on in book 3, but I guess it will take a bit longer to see the results of that.
Anyway, as with the books before it, Sanctuary is set in a sort of RPG fantasy world, where there are 'classes' such as fighters, rangers, and wizards, along with resurrection and conjure food and water spells. It's an immersive world, with a large cast of characters, recurring villains, plot twists, politics, and gory fighting. You primarily follow the fighter Cyrus Davidon, who began in book 1 as a common low level fighter and battles his way to greatness. The amazing setting and colorful descriptions are what really set this book (and series) apart from other swords and sorcery style books out there.
The kindle edition of this book is especially nice with its low price and built in dictionary that let you combat the superfluous use of unusual words. I highly recommend edition for Crusader, book 4.
I only give this book 4 stars because the epic feeling I got with the first three books seems to have worn off. If I could, I think I would give it 3.5 stars, but I am rounding up here. The world changing events and reach I came to expect and enjoy in the first books seems to have been replaced with a bit of drudgery. But this was at least intentional as we read books for the contrast of highs and lows, of seeing how our favorite heroes react in the worst of times. There were very few surprises for me, and I expected almost all of the 'plot twists' long before they occurred. I would rather read books 1-3 again then 1-4 again. But make no mistake it is a good book, weaves a good tale, and helps you learn a lot about the characters you have come to know and love.
Be warned, If I had not read books 1-3 I expect I would give this a 3 star rating at best. And books 1-3 appear to be free for now, so read them first and then enjoy this more!
When I first finished this book, I was shaking my head and thinking, "What happened???" That is what happens when you are emotionally involved. I was lost for minute, which would annoy me, but then I got my bearings and took another look... These books, this story, is so skillfully laid out. While many of us can't tell a joke without getting confused, Robert J. Crane has weaved together and overlapped amazing stories with complex characters that not only leave you wanting more, but have you going back to discover what you might have missed the first time. I LOVE IT!
Could you just pick up the Crusader and read it through without reading the first of the series? Yes, of course but then you would be missing out on how these stories are laid out, small pieces of the puzzle revealed here or there in a thought, or look by a character. Unraveling the mystery of these characters and their stories is its own adventure!
Amid the chaos of their own conflicts with other guilds and each other, fierce battles with Dark Elves and the Scourge test the mettle and character of Sanctuary members. Friendships won and lovers lost imperil heroes and villains to become more and less than they are; testing beliefs and the will to survive - which is uncertain.
With an almost unlimited number of horrible things that show no evidence of slowing down while attacking, the humans have been lucky to have been able to get some of their survivors headed toward the bridge. However, they have not been able to stop the scourge or even slightly slow down the advance of the masses. The humans have been driven back continuously and the horrible things that they face will be the winners of this war.
Interesting addition to the series. I read the first three back to back and wanted more. The only thing I don't like is the "Now" and "5 years ago.." stuff. Even if you follow a long all the books, it takes forever to figure out what is going on "Now". This series reads like a D&D adventure, lots of action with other interesting things thrown in. I will say this book was the least satisfying. The author has dragged out the so called romance between the two main parties forever. Overall still a good read but it seems he is struggling to find a story line here that works, at least compared to the other books.
All in all still entertaining, now I need to get the remaining books and see what happens...
